SMCOE Make/Learn Initiative

San Mateo County Office Of Education

I was tasked with developing a cohesive graphic identity for the launch of the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) STEM Center's Maker Education Initiative. Deliverables included:

  • A title and logo for the Initiative

  • A print program for the STEM Center's Maker Education launch event

  • A public invitation for the Maker Education launch event

  • An illustrated map showing the location of Makerspaces across San Mateo County schools and communities

I developed a logo that played on the term "Make/Learn," a combination of two active-tense verbs that also serve as a concise summary of the goals of the initiative itself. The font and outer stroke intentionally recall other prominent players in the rapidly growing maker movement, while the arrows illustrate that making and learning is a cyclical process–each one feeding into and informing the other.

The design language of the event program follows and expands upon that of the logo. Angled page edges and a bright, tertiary-dominant color palette evoke curiosity and youthful exuberance, while rational font choices and subtle grayscale background patterning moderate the overt vibrance of the design and contribute an underlying sense of credibility.

Aside from establishing a graphic identity for the initiative as a whole, my chief design priority for the program was to maximize visitors' event experience-which in this case necessitated less time thumbing through booklets and more time engaging in the numerous Maker activities. Labeled, color-coded page tabs make navigating to the needed information quick and effortless.

Starting Your Business in Vacaville

City Of VACAVILLE

My task was to design an Economic Development guide for the Vacaville City Manager's Office that would attract local entrepreneurs and small business owners to the City of Vacaville.

A key objective of the guide was to highlight the City of Vacaville's location along the busy I-80 corridor as an attractive and compelling destination for growing businesses. To this end I developed a map illustrating the City's location between two major metropolitan areas, as well as its proximity to popular tourist destinations including Reno, Tahoe and the Napa Valley. My task was to design an Economic Development guide for the Vacaville City Manager's Office that would attract local entrepreneurs and small business owners to the City of Vacaville.

The "Starting Your Business in Vacaville" guide is intended to be a handy, resource-rich booklet for entrepreneurs and small business owners to consult with repeatedly during the early stages of their enterprising. Each of the eleven "steps" outlined in the guide are color-coded and "tabbed" along the outside edge of the booklet for quick reference when flipping through the guide.

The sharp, vibrant aesthetic of the guide is designed to reflect the City of Vacaville's repositioning as a vital, dynamic, and competitive destination for innovation and emerging industries in Northern California.
